2026 Democratic Primary Propositions
Prop 1: Healthcare for All The Measure: Texas should expand Medicaid and ensure access to affordable healthcare for all. Why it Matters: Too many Texans are left behind by our current system. By expanding Medicaid, we bring federal tax dollars back to Texas to cover our most vulnerable neighbors. It’s not just about policy; it’s about the moral imperative that no one should go bankrupt just because they get sick.
Prop 2: Dignity in Immigration The Measure: Texans should support humane and dignified immigration policies and pathways to citizenship. Why it Matters: We are a diverse state strengthened by our immigrant communities. Instead of chaos and cruelty, we support an orderly, humane system that respects human rights and provides a clear, earned path to citizenship for those contributing to our economy and culture.
Prop 3: Reproductive Freedom The Measure: Texans should have the right to make their own healthcare decisions, including reproductive rights. Why it Matters: Healthcare decisions belong between a patient, their family, and their doctor—not politicians. This proposition reaffirms our commitment to restoring bodily autonomy and ensuring that reproductive freedom is protected for every Texan, now and for future generations.
Prop 4: Affordable Housing The Measure: Texas should address the state’s housing crisis in affordability and access in both urban and rural communities. Why it Matters: From young families buying their first home to seniors looking to downsize, the cost of housing has skyrocketed. We support initiatives that increase housing supply and affordability so that people who work in our communities can afford to live in them.
Prop 5: Fund Our Schools The Measure: Texas should fund all public schools at the same per-pupil rate as the national average. Why it Matters: Texas currently lags behind the national average in per-student funding, shortchanging our children’s future. This resolution demands that we stop underfunding public education and start investing in our classrooms, ensuring every Texas child has the resources they need to succeed.
Prop 6: Modernize Voter Registration The Measure: Secure online voter registration should be accessible to all eligible Texas residents. Why it Matters: In 2026, registering to vote should be as easy as paying a bill online. Texas is one of the few states that still requires paper forms, creating unnecessary hurdles. We believe in modernizing our democracy to ensure every eligible voice can be heard securely and easily.
Prop 7: Protect Our Environment The Measure: Texas should have a clean and healthy environment that includes water, air, and biodiversity. Why it Matters: We love the natural beauty of the Texas Hill Country and beyond. This proposition commits us to preserving our state’s air, water, and wildlife, ensuring that our children and grandchildren can enjoy the same scenic, healthy Texas that we cherish today.
Prop 8: Cannabis Reform The Measure: Texas should legalize cannabis for adults and automatically expunge criminal records for past low-level cannabis offenses. Why it Matters: It’s time to stop ruining lives over low-level possession charges. Legalizing and regulating cannabis allows law enforcement to focus on serious violent crime, generates state revenue, and provides a fresh start for those weighed down by past minor convictions.
Prop 9: Fair Pay for Public Servants The Measure: Raise salaries for school/state employees to the national average and provide cost-of-living adjustments. Why it Matters: Our teachers and state employees are the backbone of Texas, yet their pay has remained stagnant while inflation rises. We believe in fair wages that respect their service, ensuring we can recruit and retain the best talent to serve our state and educate our kids.
Prop 10: Fair Maps, Fair Elections The Measure: Ban racially motivated redistricting and create a non-partisan board to redraw lines every 10 years. Why it Matters: Voters should pick their leaders, not the other way around. Gerrymandering dilutes our voices and protects incumbents. We support an independent, non-partisan process to draw fair district lines that truly reflect the diversity and will of Texas voters.
Prop 11: Tax Fairness The Measure: The Working Class should be eligible for greater federal income tax relief and have their tax burden fairly shifted onto the wealthiest. Why it Matters: The tax code shouldn’t favor billionaires over workers. This proposition advocates for a system where the wealthy pay their fair share, providing much-needed relief to working families and the middle class who are feeling the squeeze of the economy.
Prop 12: Mobility for All The Measure: Expand accessible public transportation opportunities in rural and urban communities. Why it Matters: Whether it’s getting to a doctor’s appointment, school, or a job, transportation is a lifeline. Expanding public transit options connects our communities—rural and urban alike—ensuring that lack of a car doesn’t mean a lack of opportunity or healthcare access.
Prop 13: Gun Safety The Measure: Prevent individuals with a history of domestic abuse from purchasing firearms by implementing “red flag” laws. Why it Matters: We support common-sense safety measures that save lives while respecting responsible gun ownership. Keeping firearms out of the hands of known domestic abusers and those in crisis is a proven way to reduce violence and keep our families and communities safer.
